Daily Bible Reading
Monday, January 23 – 1 Samuel 2:2
Tuesday, January 24 – 1 Samuel 3:10
Wednesday, January 25– 1 Samuel 10:6
Thursday, January 26 – 1 Samuel 10:9
Friday, January 27 – 1 Samuel 12:6
Saturday, January 28 – 1 Samuel 12:14
Bible Reading Guide
1 Samuel provides a narrative of a great turning point in the History of Israel. Prior to 1 Samuel, Israel had been governed by Judges. 1 Samuel 8 records the request of the elders for the prophet Samuel to “make us a king to judge us like the other nations”. Samuel warned the people of the consequences of their actions, but they refused to listen and demanded a king. The remainder of the book describes the selection of Saul to be the first king, his reign and his tumultuous relationship with his successor David.
Questions for Reflection and Response
- Read 1 Samuel 8:19. When was the last time your received wise counsel? Why did you listen? When was the last time you chose to ignore wise counsel? Why did you refuse to take the counsel to heart?
- Read Romans 12:1-2. One of the reasons that Israel wanted a king was because they wanted to be like the other nations. Make a list of the most pervasive influences in our culture today that are counter to the will of God for your life.
- According to 1 Samuel, God desires leaders to have “his heart”. Describe the heart of God as it relates to leadership.
- Read Samuel’s words in 1 Samuel 15:22-23 and Saul’s response in 1 Samuel 15:24. In some ways, Saul can be described as a “people pleaser”. Why the temptation to be a “people pleaser”?

| Devotional Reading - Tuesday, November 01, 2011 Find Yourself in the Story - The narrative is among the most compelling in the New Testament. A woman is caught in sin and brought to Jesus. In an attempt to draw Jesus into controversy, her accusers ask for His ruling on the woman's fate. Should she die? This dramatic scene provides an excellent backdrop for introspection. Download a personal devotional guide written by Pastor Paul Metler that is based upon the events recorded in John 8:1-11.
